Concord, MA – Frances L. (Macartney) Porter, 90, of Newbury Court died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Rivercrest Long Term Care Facility, Concord, MA. She was the wife of the late Stevenson B. Porter. Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Henry S. and Elouise (Davis) Macartney, she had lived in Acton, MA and summered in Edgartown, MA for many years before moving to Concord 12 years ago. Mrs. Porter graduated from Pawtucket High School in 1938 and from Forsyth School in Boston in 1940. Her experience working in Dental Hygiene spanned 40 years, mostly working with children either in a classroom situation or in clinical research during the years fluorides were being introduced as a means of reducing tooth decay. Except for a brief time spent at the John T. Berry Rehabilitation Center in North Reading, MA under the Department of Mental Health setting-up a dental program; and involvement in a research project conducted by Tufts University at the Lawton Clinic in Central Falls, she worked mostly in schools in cities and towns that included: Newport, RI (during World War II), Attleboro, MA, Lexington, MA and Andover (MA) Public Schools from which she retired in 1980. She was a life Member of the ADHA (American Dental Hygienists Association); a life member of the Forsyth Alumnae Association; Sigma Phi Alpha (Pi Chapter), the National Dental Hygiene Honor Society; and a life member of the 99's (Ninety-Nines), the International Organization of Women Pilots. She is survived by one cousin, Richard J. Drape of Rehoboth, MA. Her funeral will be held FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 26 at 11 A.M. at Historic Swan Point Chapel, 585 Blackstone Boulevard, Providence. Her burial will be private. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at Swan Point Chapel FRIDAY from 10 A.M.
